As my guide and I waited in our car at a crowded stoplight surrounded by scores of motorcycles, it struck me: I didn’t hear a single bike engine roar. “My host casually said in response to the query. “They’re electric.” I wondered if that kind of silence could also be experienced by riders and their passengers on the congested streets of Africa. Back at the office in Paris, I had a long conversation with one of my colleagues about a pilot project to introduce this technology to African cities. It didn’t happen. Perhaps we were not persuasive enough in the proposal that we wrote. But a few years later, Ampersand, a tech startup, did just that, becoming Africa’s first electric transport company and proving our dream was still possible!
